Sayabouly Elephant Sanctuary
Wannabe mahouts seeking a comprehensive six – day training course and travelers looking for an authentic elephants experience on the pachyderm's home turf hit pay dirt at the Sayabouly Elephant Sanctuary.
Elephant Asia is constructing the conservation and breeding center on the banks of the Namtiene Reservoir near Sayabouly town, and plans calls for tourism activities alongside a breeding and nursery center, research and care unit with a hospital and mobile veterinarian clinic, and professional mahout school.
The 10 – hectare sanctuary expects to launch tourism activities in February 2011, and will add more in phases unit its slated late- 2013 completion. Accommodation includes bungalows and a dormitory, and restaurant/ bar set among botanical gardens.
Topping the activity chart is an intense six – day " Mahout Training " package during which participants enter their own social realm…… living with mahouts, grooming and feeding elephants, immersing themselves in the local culture, and cooking their own food.
Those looking for a soft yet authentic experience can embark on short elephant treks, observe training, canoes on the reservoir, and mountain bike around the grounds. Guests can also enjoy the view from an observation tower, visit the museum and watch films about this magnificent creature.
Location: The site is located on the Namtiene Reservoir just 5 km west of Sayabouly district center.
